Teeny Tiny Thoughts, Volume III

July 29, 2009 by

Volume I and Volume II are here.

  • back from BlogHer ’09, safe and sound
  • I had a ball, and was beyond grateful and ecstatic that Adam came along
  • I still don’t like to fly, and on the way home had to sit in the middle seat with strangers. I liked saving $$ with Southwest, but don’t like that aspect.
  • At All.
  • I am still quite happy with my decision to not Twitter.
  • We went to the CheeseBurgHer party. And we both wore bags on our head
  • we left before security broke it up
  • I didn’t puke at all the whole time I was there.
  • I came home and puked. I don’t really know why. I feel fine now.
  • weird.
  • there was puke in the elevators at BlogHer. Somehow I don’t think it was from morning sickness.
  • I just finished reading Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver
  • I loved it
  • now I want to live on a sustainable farm
  • since moving isn’t in the cards, we’re going for a walk to the produce stand today
  • I’m thinking some sort of zucchini minestrone soup, ceaser salad, and garlic bread for dinner.
  • I ordered a Breadman last night from Amazon (crap, now it’s $6 cheaper), after reading the raving reviews from Karina
  • the kids did great at my parents—-they also seem to have grown 8 inches.
  • I can’t wait to put homemade pizza back into our weekly menu.
  • anyone have a fantastic gluten free pizza dough recipe? I’d love to make the dough in the new bread machine, then roll it out.
  • I had deep dish pizza in Chicago! It was quite dough-y (it wasn’t GF, I’m not personally GF)
  • my friend Laura (warning, Laura swears in her writing) had a HORRIBLE cross-contamination reaction at a VERY WELL-KNOWN restaurant chain that advertises gluten free food while in Chicago, and was admitted to the hospital. After calling, she learned that the chef didn’t use clean pans when making items off their gluten free menu. We’ve decided it’s not necessary to name the name of the restaurant chain (she is going to write a letter), but please tuck it away to specifically request clean pans when ordering, even at an establishment that caters to gluten free customers.
  • ugh. I hate it that she had to go through this.
  • we’re off to the farmer’s market, and to play in the garden

Have an absolutely wonderful day! I’m happy to be home.

I love Animal, Vegetable, Miracle. We’ve made several of the recipes.

Here’s a fabulous GF pizza crust recipe that I found — you almost can’t tell the difference!

    Gluten free Pizza

    1 Tbsp dry yeast
2/3 cup garbanzo/fava flour blend or brown rice flour (I use Bob’s Red Mill garfava blend)
    ½ cup tapioca flour
    2 Tbsp powdered milk
    2 tsp. xanthan gum
    ½ tsp salt
    1 tsp unflavored gelatin
1 tsp Italian Seasoning (or ½ tsp oregano and ½ tsp basil)
    2/3 cup water (110 degrees F)
    ½ tsp sugar or honey
    1 tsp olive oil
    1 tsp cider vinegar

    • Preheat oven to 425 degrees F – if you wish, you can put your pizza stone in the oven and heat that at the same time (you’ll place your pizza pan on top of the stone)
    • In medium bowl, using regular beaters of your electric mixer, blend all ingredients on low speed.
    • Beat on high speed for 3 minutes.
    • If dough is too stiff, add up to 2 Tbsp water, 1 Tbsp at a time.
    • Put mixture on lightly greased and floured 12-inch pizza pan – the kind with the holes in it.
    • Liberally sprinkle the flour on the dough, then press dough into pan.
    • Make edges slightly thicker to hold toppings.
    • Place pan in oven (on top of the pre-heated pizza stone) and bake the plain pizza crust for 10 minutes.
    • Remove from oven.
    • Spread pizza crust with 1 ladle of sauce and your preferred toppings.
    • Bake another 15-23 minutes or until top is browned. (Watch the pizza — it’s the toppings that determine when the pizza is done since the crust is cooked ahead of time.)

[I tried making this crust directly on a pizza stone but didn't like the result as well as when I make it with the 'hole-y' pizza pan sitting on top of the pizza stone.]

Make sure you only cook GF stuff in your breadman. I was told that even with washing, it’s safer to have 2 breadman machines if you’re GF.

I have a Breadman, too. It is sad and lonesome after my love affair with the CrockPot. 2010…A Year of Breadman Cooking?

“I ordered a Breadman last night from Amazon (crap, now it’s $6 cheaper), after reading the raving reviews from Karina ”

Amazon doesn’t advertise this, but they have a 30-day price drop policy. If you order something and the price drops within 30 days of you ordering it, you can get a refund for the difference. It saved me about $100 when I ordered a tv from them a couple years ago!

I found this site: http://rsstalker.com/ It will monitor amazon products for you, and it also tells you how to go about getting your refund (at the bottom of the page). Hope this helps you!

I always love your teeny tiny thoughts, Stephanie. They brighten my day. :-)

Not a pizza recipe with a traditional dough and I may have mentioned it before, but my flourless gf pizza (where the crust is made from cheese and eggs) is pretty wonderful. http://glutenfreeeasily.com/flourless-gluten-free-pizza/ Good luck with your traditional pizza crust in the breadmaker too, though.

Neat to hear the wonderful info on the BlogHer conference since I am going to the food one in San Francisco in Sept. Can’t wait to meet up with all my online buddies and meet equally great, new folks! Ugh on the elevator incident though. I dealt with enough vomit when my son was little .. thank you very much.

    Hugs,
    Shirley

Oh, I forgot to say how sorry I am about your friend’s experience. Sending her wishes for a speedy recovery (usually not the case when one is glutened, but I hope this ime will be an exception … it hurt me to just read about her experience … all of us who are gf can totally relate). Great reminder, Stephanie. We just discussed this issue in general at our support group meeting the other night. Restaurants that are known to be gf friendly or have gf menus can provide a false sense of security. We still must quiz folks to a certain degree … lack of proper training, forgetfulness, etc. can all come into play and blindside us. Frankly, I’ve found restaurants where the people genuinely care about your safety and welfare to be as good or better than ones that are known to be gf.

It might depend on whether it came from Amazon or one of their subcontractors. I reuqested a price adjustment within 30 days one time and they said that they DON’T do it.
